Leana Rutt is a cellist originally from London, Ontario. A thoughtful and compelling performer, she is in high demand as both a chamber and orchestral musician. Since 2013 she has been the assistant principal cellist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and in 2019 was named the principal cellist of the Canadian Opera Company.
Leana has devoted much of her musical career to chamber music. She has performs regularly as a member of the Rosebud Quartet and of the Iris Ensemble, and has been a guest artist at festivals and series across Canada including Music By the Sea, Kaimerata, the Rosebud Chamber Music Festival, and the Lunenburg Academy.
Leana is grateful for the formative summers she spent at the festivals of Lucerne, Aldeburgh, Sarasota, Banff, and Domaine Forget, as well as the Piatigorsky International Cello Festival. She is a graduate of McGill University and the Juilliard School, and her private teachers include Terry Sefton, Paul Pulford, Matt Haimovitz and Timothy Eddy.
